Description

This project is being undertaken as part of a PhD Project.

The purpose of this project is to explore the factors that affect father involvement in parenting by investigating the decision making processes of couples. Participants in the study will be asked to participate in a semi-structure interview together as couples.

Fathers report experiencing barriers to full participation in raising their children, even as mothers continue to contribute the most hours to child rearing. Further exploration and discussion of father involvement in the lives of children is crucial for progress toward a more balance model of co-parenting. The research team requests your assistance because this study aims to collect information on how parents can find a more balanced approach to modern parenting.

Participation

Your participation will involve participation in an interview with your partner that will take approximately 60 minutes of your time.

The interview will take place at a time and venue that is convenient to you.

Questions will revolve around a scenario regarding seeking assistance for a child and the decision making process that would ensue. You will be asked about options you will consider in order to make this decision. After discussing the scenario, you will comment on similarities and differences with real decision making processes you have encountered as parents seeking assistance for your child.

The interview will be audio recorded.

Your participation in this project is entirely voluntary. If you do not wish to take part you are not obliged to. If you decide to take part and later change your mind, you are free to withdraw from the project at any stage. You may also request that any data collected about you be destroyed up to the point that your name is removed from your responses, and your responses are added to a larger group of responses that will be stored under secure electronic storage in a de-identified form (without your name). If you do wish to withdraw from this project or withdraw data collected about you, please contact the Research Team (contact details at the top of this form).

Your decision whether you take part, do not take part, or to take part and then withdraw, will in no way impact your current or future relationship with the University of Southern Queensland.

Expected Benefits

It is expected that this project will directly benefit you by enabling a fruitful discussion of how you as parents make decisions regarding seeking assistance for your children. However, more broadly, it may benefit other researchers and service providers in best assisting parents, which in turn will have benefits for the health and well-being of children.

Risks

There are no anticipated risks beyond normal day-to-day living associated with your participation in this project.

Sometimes thinking about the sorts of issues raised in the interview can create some uncomfortable or distressing feelings. If you need to talk to someone about this immediately please contact Lifeline on 13 11 14. You may also wish to consider consulting your General Practitioner (GP) for additional support.

Privacy and Confidentiality

All comments and responses will be treated confidentially unless required by law.
The audio recordings will be transcribed and participant information will be de-identified. Once the audio recordings are transcribed, they will be securely stored under secure electronic storage in a de-identified form (without your name). Other than the researchers and those involved in transcription, no other persons will be given access to the recordings.

All data collected as a part of this project will be stored securely as per University of Southern Queensland’s Research Data Management policy (without your name) and may be used for research publications and in future research projects.

Consent to Participate

We would like to ask you to sign a written consent form (link) to confirm your agreement to participate in this project. Please return your signed consent form to a member of the Research Team prior to participating in your interview.
